CTC BP 1

BP1 Tea from Sri Lanka BP1 or Broken Pekoe 1, is a grade of Ceylon black tea produced using the CTC (Cut, Tear, Curl) method. This process creates small, granular tea particles that brew quickly and yield a strong, full-bodied cup with a dark reddish liquor. BP1 tea is known for its bold flavor, making it a popular choice for those who enjoy a robust and invigorating tea experience.

  • Measure Tea Leaves: Use about 1 teaspoon (2-3 grams) of BP1 tea per cup (240 ml) of water.
  • Heat the Water: Bring water to a rolling boil (95–100°C or 203–212°F).
  • Steep the Leaves: Add the tea leaves to a teapot, infuser or directly into your cup. Pour the hot water over the leaves and let them steep for 2-3 minutes.
  • Strain and Serve: Remove the tea leaves or strain the tea into a cup. The resulting liquor will be dark and rich.
  • Optional Additions: BP1 tea is often enjoyed with milk and sugar, but it can also be served plain for a stronger taste.

BP1 tea’s bold and malty flavor pairs well with a variety of foods:

  • Sweet Treats:
Sri Lankan Sweets: Pair with kokis (crispy rice flour snacks) or aluwa (rice flour and sugar-based sweets).
Pastries: Butter cookies, caramel tarts or chocolate brownies complement the tea’s robust profile.
  • Savory Snacks:
Spicy Bites: Enjoy with seeni sambol buns (sweet and spicy onion buns) or pol roti (coconut flatbread with chili sambol).
Cheese: Mild cheeses like Gouda or Cheddar balance the tea’s strength.
  • Fruity Note:
Dried fruits like apricots or figs add a natural sweetness that enhances the tea’s flavor.
Fresh citrus slices, such as orange or lemon, can brighten the tea’s boldness.
  • Nuts and Seeds: Light, savory dishes like cucumber sandwiches, spinach quiche or rice crackers work well without overpowering the tea’s subtle nuances.
  • Nuts & Seeds: Roasted almonds, cashews or sesame snacks provide a satisfying crunch and complement the tea’s malty undertones.
