OP1

OP1 tea short for Orange Pekoe 1 is a high-quality grade of whole leaf black tea. It is part of the Orange Pekoe grading system, which classifies tea based on the size and appearance of the tea leaves. OP1 tea features long, thin and slightly wiry leaves, offering a more refined and uniform appearance compared to standard OP (Orange Pekoe) tea.

When brewed, OP1 tea produces a smoother and lighter cup with a bright amber hue, making it an excellent choice for those who prefer a delicate and less robust tea flavor. It’s particularly cherished for its subtle aroma and refined taste.

  • Measure Tea Leaves: Use approximately 1 teaspoon (2-3 grams) of OP1 tea per cup (240 ml) of water. Adjust based on your strength preference.
  • Heat the Water: Bring water to a boil (95–100°C or 203–212°F), then allow it to cool slightly for about 30 seconds.
  • Steep the Tea: Place the OP1 tea leaves in an infuser, teapot or directly in your cup. Pour the hot water over the leaves and let them steep for 3-5 minutes. Shorter steeping will produce a lighter, smoother cup, while longer steeping enhances strength and depth.
  • Strain and Serve:Remove the tea leaves or use a strainer to pour the brewed tea into your cup. You’ll notice a bright amber liquor with a delicate aroma.
  • Optional Additions: While OP1 tea is delightful plain, you can add honey, sugar, milk or a slice of lemon to personalize your cup.

Sweet Pairings:

  • Shortbread Cookies: Their buttery sweetness complements the smoothness of OP1 tea perfectly.
  • Honey-Glazed Pastries: Enhance the natural sweetness of the tea with lightly sweetened baked treats.
  • Light Cakes: Delicate options like sponge cake or chiffon cake pair seamlessly without overpowering the tea.

Savory Pairings:

  • Cucumber Sandwiches: Light, savory dishes like cucumber sandwiches, spinach quiche or rice crackers work well without overpowering the tea’s subtle nuances.
  • Cheese Crackers: Mild cheese or herb-infused crackers offer a savory contrast to the tea's smoothness.
  • Egg Salad Sandwiches: Soft and creamy, these sandwiches harmonize beautifully with OP1 tea.

Fruity Notes:

  • Dried Fruits: Apricots, figs or golden raisins bring a natural sweetness that enhances the tea's aroma.
  • Citrus Slices: Lemon or orange slices add a refreshing zest, brightening the tea’s flavor profile.

Nuts & Chocolates:

  • Almonds or Cashews: Their gentle nuttiness enhances the tea’s light character.
  • Dark Chocolate: A square of dark chocolate balances beautifully with the tea’s subtle astringency.
