FF1 EX SP / FBOPF1 EX SP

FF1 EX SP tea, also known as Flowery Broken Orange Pekoe Fannings Extra Special, is a premium grade of Ceylon black tea from Sri Lanka. It is highly regarded for its small, wiry, broken leaves and an abundance of golden and silver tips, which signify the use of tender, high-quality tea buds. This tea is often produced in limited quantities, making it a luxurious and sought-after choice.

When brewed, FF1 EX SP tea produces a bright reddish liquor with a full-bodied flavor and a honey-like sweetness. It is known for its smooth, aromatic profile, making it ideal for special occasions or as a gift for tea enthusiasts.

  • Measure Tea Leaves: Use about 1 teaspoon (2-3 grams) of FF1 EX SP tea per cup (240 ml) of water. The high-quality leaves and tips ensure rich flavor even with a small amount.
  • Heat the Water: Heat fresh water to around 90–95°C (194–203°F). Avoid boiling temperatures to preserve the delicate flavors of the golden and silver tips.
  • Steep the Tea: Add the tea leaves to an infuser or teapot and pour the hot water over them. Allow the tea to steep for 2-3 minutes for a lighter flavor or up to 4 minutes for a fuller-bodied cup.
  • Strain and Serve: Remove the leaves and pour the golden-reddish liquor into your cup. The tea’s aroma should be rich and inviting, with hints of honey or caramel.
  • Optional Additions: For an unadulterated experience, enjoy the tea plain. However, you can add a touch of honey to enhance the natural sweetness or a slice of lemon for a refreshing twist. Milk is generally avoided, as it can overpower the delicate profile.

Given its refined profile, FF1 EX SP tea pairs beautifully with both sweet and savory flavors:

Sweet Pairings:

  • Syrupy Treats: Baklava or basbousa (Middle Eastern desserts) enhance the tea’s honey-like notes.
  • Light Desserts: Almond tarts, vanilla macarons or shortbread cookies provide a delicate complement to the tea.
  • Fruit-Based Snacks: Dried fruits like figs, apricots or dates add a natural sweetness that pairs wonderfully with the tea.

Savory Pairings:

  • Cheese Bites: Mild cheeses like Brie or cream cheese spread on crackers balance the tea’s richness.
  • Light Sandwiches: Cucumber or smoked salmon sandwiches offer a refreshing contrast.
  • Herb-Infused Snacks: Za’atar flatbread or rosemary breadsticks highlight the tea’s warm undertones.
